Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s embargo on the entry of journalists into the finance ministry without prior permission has left the mediapersons confused. She is continuing with the ban that she had imposed during the making of the budget. But, even after the tabling of the budget, the ban is continuing.
Several media organisations have taken a serious view of this restriction and have lodge complaints with the Press Council of India and Editors’ Guild. The media persons want unrestricted access to the finance ministry offices, but the government seems to be in no mood to oblige.
Usually, every year during the budget time, the finance ministry imposes what is known as media quarantine. This is usually lifted after the budget is presented. But, this time around, Nirmala Sitharaman has not lifted the quarantine and the mediapersons who went to the finance ministry as part of their beat duties, were turned back by the officials.
